Guardian Rumour Mill

John Ashdown

First off, the big one. The weekend tabloids suggest Lionel Messi could be on his way to the Premier League. Yes, the Barcelona forward is apparently miffed at the taxman’s pestering and is ready to swap Spain for England. His destination of choice? Arsenal! But, the Daily Star says, his £600,000-a-week in wages could prove something of a stumbling block (presumably that’s a stumbling block in the same way that a lack of wings and thighs the size of a small town are a stumbling block to hippos’ attempts to fly, or in the way that being a small tasty yellow fruit is a stumbling block to a banana’s attempts to win the Booker Prize).

Arsenal also want the Barcelona B captain Alex Grimaldo, who is struggling to make an impression on the first team at Camp Nou. The left-back is out of contract next summer so could be available for free. And the Gunners have also sent scouts to win their “Watch Napoli midfielder Jorginho” badges.

And to finish off this Arsenal-centric opening to today’s gossip, Arsène Wenger wants Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka in January, but will have to fight off competition from Atlético Madrid and Internazionale.

So to Old Trafford. Real Madrid are prepared to let Cristiano Ronaldo go as long as they get their money back. Remarkably they still have the receipt and Manchester United are prepared to hand back the £80m they received for the Portuguese as long as he remains in his original packaging.

United also want Arjen Robben, who is heading out of Bayern after Robert Lewandowski hurt his feelings. And they’re keeping tabs on Leeds winger Lewis Cook, who could be theirs for £7m the other side of Christmas.

Belgian wonderkid Charly Musonda wants out of Chelsea and United are prepared to offer him an escape route – £10.6m should be enough to swing the deal. And United are also weighing up a £15m move for Jamie Vardy in January.

After all that heavy-hitting transfer chat, anything else is going to seem a little unexciting.

So Newcastle will move for Saido Berahino in January.

West Ham co-chairman David Gold reveals Kieron Dyer cost club £10m in WAGES during injury-hit spell

By Liam Prenderville

The former England midfielder moved to Upton Park from Newcastle in 2007 in a £6million deal but made just 30 appearances for the club

David Gold has claimed Kieron Dyer cost West Ham a staggering £16million on transfer fees and wages.

The former England midfielder moved to Upton Park from Newcastle in 2007 in a £6million deal and spent four injury-hit years with the club.

He was released in 2011 and joined QPR and after a brief spell with Middlesbrough, retired two years later.

Dyer has since signed up for I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here , which was broadcast for the first time on Sunday night.

And one West Ham fan couldn't resist the opportunity to ask just how much Dyer cost the club.

Kieron moved to West Ham for 6m in 2007 played 30 league games with out scoring left in 2011 total wages 10m dg https://t.co/vrkhowdr7G
— David Gold (@davidgold) November 15, 2015

Gold responded in no-nonsense fashion and refused to hide just how much of an error the Hammers made with the signing.

He posted: "Kieron moved to West Ham for 6m in 2007 played 30 league games with out scoring left in 2011 total wages 10m dg."

Dyer has revealed he is doing the ITV show for his kids and to raise awareness for stillbirth charity , after his brother died when Kieron was seven.

He said: "Being a patron, I wanted the fee to go towards that.

When I told my kids I had the chance to do it, I think they want to see Daddy embarrass himself on telly, going on to do trials.”

West Ham give managers more time than any other club in history of English football; but has it worked?

West Ham United are officially the most loyal club in the entire history of English football.

Damien Lucas

According to football data archive website Soccerbase, the Hammers come out on top when compared to any other club when it comes to the length of time they have given managers over the years.

Since becoming a professional outfit in 1898, West Ham have had just 17 managers take the helm at the Boleyn Ground.

Those bosses have enjoyed an average of 2,431 days in the job, as reported by Sky Sports, which is more than six-and-a-half years each.

It proves that the Hammers have more often that not given their managers the time to get things right at Upton Park.

West Ham United manager Syd King, with Mr C Paynter, trainer.

Longest serving boss was at helm for 30 years

Remarkably Syd King, who led the club into the Football League, was in charge for 11,172 days between 1902 and 1932 while Charlie Paynter (6,482 days, 1932-1950), John Lyall (5,407 days, 1974-1989), Ron Greenwood (4,885 days, 1961-1974) and Ted Fenton (3,895 days, 1950-1961) also enjoyed prolonged periods in charge of the East London side.

Manchester United, Everton, Liverpool and Arsenal complete the top five English clubs who give their managers time.

Has it been a successful strategy?

While it is admirable that the Hammers have generally granted their managers a generous stay - a fact that will no doubt be of great comfort to current incumbent Slaven Bilic - has it done them any favours?

The Hammers are widely considered the biggest club never to have won the top flight title.

The closest they have come was in 1985/6 when they should have won the league but were pipped at the post by Liverpool and Everton to finish third.

John Lyall's side won 26 of their 42 games that season and finished with 84 points but lost out to the great Liverpool side which won the double that season.

Fifth is the highest the Hammers have finished in the Premier League era, under Harry Redknapp, while the Irons have three FA Cups to their name.

They shared the Charity Shield in 1964 and famously won the European Cup Winners Cup a year later.

An Intertoto Cup win in 1999 and two Championship Play-Off Final trophies are the only silverware the Hammers have lifted since 1980.

So fans could perhaps question why during so many barren years the club did not show more ambition to bring in a manager to really help push for major honours.

One achievement outstrips all the rest

Of course many West Ham fans would argue their biggest achievement outstrips all others, winning the World Cup for their country in 1966.

Captain Bobby Moore led the holy trinity of striker Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters to the Jules Rimet at Wembley, with Hurst and Peters getting all the goals in the 4-2 win over Germany.

It could be argued more managers may have led to more success but in this modern era of changing managers multiple times a season at some clubs, West Ham make a refreshing statement.

Westley delighted with Academy signings

Academy manager Terry Westley spoke of his delight after signing two highly rated prospects in the space of a week.

Academy of Football product Marcus Browne, 17, put pen to paper on a professional contract while exciting winger Dan Kemp, 16, signed from London rivals Chelsea.

Reflecting on a busy yet highly productive week for the West Ham United Academy, Westley said: “It’s been a very good week for the Academy. We’ve signed two very exciting players, two game changers if you like, they’re both players who can open a game up and make things happen.”

Midfielder Browne has gone from strength to strength this season, having suffered injury problems last term, the youngster has taken the step up from the U18s to the U21s in his stride.

Since making his Development Squad debut against Arsenal, he has made seven appearances scoring in the 4-0 demolition of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Westley continued: “Marcus has been offered a professional contract. It’s richly deserved, he’s been one of the best U18 players and he’s transferred that to the U21s where he’s really caught the eye.

“He did well in the behind-closed-doors game with Crystal Palace, playing as a No10 in front of Mark Noble and Alex Song.”

Westley was equally delighted to capture the signature of diminutive yet explosive forward Dan Kemp.
With several clubs interested in the 16-year-old, the Academy manager described the process in securing the teenager’s talents.

“I joined West Ham about 18 months ago and I took an U16 team to Chelsea where he ripped us apart. I quickly asked Dave Hunt (Head of Recruitment at the Academy) ‘Who is this boy?’ but Chelsea quite rightly wanted to keep him.

“He’s been there a very long time; it’s been a great apprenticeship there if you like. I kept nagging away at Neil Bath the Chelsea Academy manager and now the time was right.

“Danny sees a great pathway here to the first team, and he has a real opportunity here. I’m delighted that he’s come over to us.”

With both Browne and Kemp’s futures sorted, Westley is expecting big things from the pair, at both U18 and U21 level.

Despite Kemp’s diminutive size, Westley is confident the winger’s ability and skill: “It doesn’t matter too much about size or height, Danny is in the same mould as a David Silva, he can take the ball and he can beat you. With the length of the contract we’ve given him time to develop, that time is valuable.

“We should put him under a lot of pressure because he’s a big marquee signing for the Academy, and he’s also good enough to handle that extra expectation.

“We don’t just sign anyone, we’ve chased him for a while, and we know what we’re getting. We will have to be patient and that’s why it’s a longer term contract.

“I certainly expect to see him play for the U21s; I see no reason why he can’t take the ball and make things happen for us at that level.”
